The Red Cross Rwanda donated 210 pigs to vulnerable families of Kabaya, Matyazo and Muhanda sectors in Ngororero district.
Emmanuel Mazimpaka, vice mayor for finance and economic development for Ngororero district who also doubles as the president for Red Cross in the district said that giving livestock to vulnerable families is the approach expected to develop people to become self -reliant.
Mazimpaka added that for beneficiaries, to receive stock represents a ray of hope for getting out of poverty trap. “The stock provides manure for small family farms and kitchen gardens and also generates income” he explained.
There has been an increased inflow of small livestock in the district. This has resulted in increased income from the market value chain, improved diet and increased agricultural production,” said the vice mayor.
Through rearing these pigs, the beneficiaries are sure to provide for their financial needs, buy medical insurance, and pay for their children school fees especially with pigs being so productive with many piglets in a short period of time.
“I am sure this pig will support my family to boost my crop production through manure and I will be selling the piglets to meet my family financial needs,” said Odetha Mukandori, one of the beneficiaries.
