Red Cross Rwanda, a humanitarian organisation donated 21 Friesian cows worth Rwf10 million to the cooperatives for vulnerable residents in Zihare and Mbeho villages in Kibirizi sector of Gisagara district under Girinka program.
The event was held on August 28th 2014 in Kibirizi sector in Gisagara district.
The cows were given to the members of cooperatives for the poor living in Ndatwa hills with the aim to fight poverty in that area.
During the event, Dr Bernard Nzigiye; president of Red Cross Rwanda revealed that the move aimed at helping vulnerable residents to fight poverty.
“We had donated cows before in addition to other activities like building schools, paying school fees for poor children and building houses for orphans and vulnerable residents in Gisagara district,” he said.
“I have been making pots to survive but in vain as there is no demand. I thank Red Cross for the cow. I will get milk and manure to sell,” Josephine Kamanzi, one of the beneficiary said.
“I grow crops but no harvest because land is infertile. This cow will give me manure to use for increased yields,” said Marie Mukamugema; another beneficiary.
Apart from cows, the residents in selected villages were also sensitised on family planning program and maintaining hygiene to prevent diseases, he added.
