World Vision has committed its support in helping people living with disabilities have access to facilities, such as wheelchairs to easy their movement.

The World Vision rwanda office, this Monday handed over 550 wheelchairs worth Rwf 25 million to Handicap International. These will be handed over to vulnerable disabled persons across the countryside

George Gitau,World Vision Rwanda National Director, who handed over the equipment, said that World Vision plans on a partnering with Handicap International to ensure that people living with disabilities receive support.

Gallican Mugabonake, coordinator of the inclusive development project at Handicap International, revealed that the donation is timely and will be additional support to the growing need for wheelchairs for disabled people in Rwanda

The wheelchairs will help take disabled persons who feel isolated in terms of accessibility. The demand for wheelchairs is at 660 individuals, but we are hopeful that, through this partnership, the rest will be distributed in June this year” he said.

Since 2012, World Vision Rwanda has partnered with Handicap International to support people living with disabilities through providing wheelchairs. Last year, 973 wheelchairs were given to 16 districts and health facilities

The problem of accessibility for disabled persons remains a challenge for Rwanda’s infrastructure especially that most structures are not user friendly for disabled persons, but Mugabonake says that he is optimistic that Rwanda is moving forward in providing inclusive infrastructure, but that still a lot needs to be done in policy and implementations.
